Whole-Home Rewiring

Older homes with aluminum or cloth-insulated wiring benefit from complete rewiring for safety and reliability.

GFCI Outlets and AFCI Breakers: What Every Phoenix Homeowner Needs to Know

Two of the most important safety upgrades in any home are GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets and AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) breakers. Many homes in the Phoenix area — especially those built before 2002 — are missing one or both. Here is what they do, where they are required, and why they matter.

GFCI Outlets: Shock Protection

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit. The moment it detects current leaking to an unintended path — such as through a person who has touched a live wire near water — it shuts off power in as little as 1/40th of a second, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock.

GFCI outlets are recognizable by their TEST and RESET buttons on the face of the outlet. A single GFCI outlet can also protect all downstream outlets on the same circuit, which is why electricians often install one GFCI outlet at the start of a circuit rather than replacing every outlet individually.

Where GFCI Protection Is Required

Bathrooms — all outlets
Kitchens — outlets within 6 feet of a sink
Garages and detached outbuildings
All outdoor outlets
Unfinished basements and crawl spaces
Within 6 feet of pools, spas, and hot tubs
Laundry areas and utility sinks

Signs Your GFCI Outlets Need Attention

Outlet does not trip when tested

Press TEST — if the outlet stays live, the GFCI has failed and needs replacement.

Outlet will not reset

A GFCI that trips but will not reset may indicate a persistent ground fault or a failed device.

Discoloration or burning smell

Visible scorching or a burning odor near any outlet is an immediate call-an-electrician situation.

No GFCI outlets in wet areas

Older homes often have standard outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages where GFCI is now required.

Common Causes of Arc Faults in Phoenix Homes

Damaged wire insulation

Wiring that has been nicked during renovation, chewed by pests, or degraded by age can arc inside walls.

Loose connections at outlets or switches

Connections that have worked loose over time create intermittent arcing that a standard breaker cannot detect.

Overloaded extension cords

Running high-draw appliances through undersized extension cords is a leading cause of arc faults.

Aluminum wiring (pre-1973 homes)

Aluminum wiring expands and contracts with heat cycles, loosening connections and increasing arc fault risk significantly.

AFCI Breakers: Fire Prevention

An arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) breaker detects the specific electrical signature of dangerous arcing — the kind that occurs inside walls when wiring insulation is damaged, connections are loose, or cords are pinched. Standard circuit breakers only trip on overloads and short circuits; they cannot detect arc faults, which is why arc faults cause thousands of residential fires every year.

AFCI breakers replace standard breakers in your electrical panel. Combination AFCI breakers — the type required by current code — protect against both series and parallel arc faults and also include GFCI protection on some models.

Where AFCI Breakers Are Required

All bedrooms (required since 1999)
Living rooms, family rooms, and dens
Dining rooms and hallways
Closets and sunrooms
Kitchens and laundry areas (NEC 2020)
Any new or rewired circuit in living spaces

51%

of home electrical fires involve wiring, outlets, or switches — the exact hazards GFCI and AFCI devices address

1/40s

How fast a GFCI outlet cuts power when it detects a ground fault — fast enough to prevent electrocution

Pre-2002

Most Phoenix-area homes built before 2002 have no AFCI protection — upgrading is one of the highest-impact safety improvements available

Elite Pro Services installs and tests GFCI outlets and AFCI breakers throughout Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Phoenix.
